Starting a Direct Sales Business

Starting a direct sales business takes courage, creativity and can be a rewarding experience.  Starting a direct sales business will hopefully allow the salesperson to establish a good clientele and bring in a steady income while allowing them to be their own boss.    Direct sales offer great flexibility in scheduling, good income and incentives.

When starting a direct sales business, the first thing to do is to decide what company the “owner” is going to represent.   This involves good research.  A good way to research a company is first checking with the Better Business Bureau.  The Better Business Bureau can inform the seller if a company has a history of complaints against them.   If the company has several complaints filed,  it is probably not a legitimate company or has poor client support at best.    They can also try to contact other people who represent the company and see if their experience has been a positive one.

It is wise to choose a company that has products that will sell now and in the future.  It is wise to know the market that the sales are going to made in.   If the seller lives in an economically depressed area,  customers are not going to be interested in high priced jewelry.   Match the product with the market.

Start up cost should be considered.   Different companies offer different kits to start selling. Some are reasonable and some quite expensive.    Sellers should try to find a company that will allow them to purchase a moderately priced kit with the basics.  Start up kits can always be added to when the business starts to flourish.  .

Once a company is chosen to represent, it is time to start advertising.  Many companies will provide their representatives with their own websites to advertise their business and accept orders.  There are many avenues for advertising such as newspaper ads, bulletin boards, word or mouth or flyers.
